ULTAR SAR PEAK (7388M)

Overview

Ultar Sar ( (also Ultar, Ultar II, Bojohagur Duanasir II) is the southeasternmost major peak of the Batura Muztagh, a subrange of the Karakoram range. It lies about 10 km (6.2 mi) northeast of Karimabad, a town on the Karakoram Highway in the Hunza Valley, part of the Hunza District of Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan. Ultar Sar, also referred to as Ultar II, stands as a prominent peak within the rugged landscape of the Karakoram mountain range in Pakistan. Despite not boasting the highest elevation in the region, its sheer vertical rise, particularly along its southern face near Karimabad, commands attention. This steep ascent, with the Hunza River snaking below, contributes to its visual allure and challenges climbers to conquer its heights. During the 1990s, Ultar Sar gained international renown as it was widely believed to be the highest unclimbed peak in the world. This reputation sparked a flurry of climbing expeditions eager to claim the summit. However, the treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather proved formidable obstacles. Despite multiple attempts by fifteen expeditions during this period, success eluded climbers, and tragically, fatalities occurred. The breakthrough came in 1996 when two separate Japanese teams achieved the historic feat of reaching Ultar Sar's summit. Led by Akito Yamazaki and Ken Takahashi, these expeditions marked the end of the peak's elusive status. Yamazaki and his partner, Kiyoshi Matsuoka, employed a daring alpine-style ascent, braving perilous conditions, including night climbs to evade falling debris. Tragically, Yamazaki succumbed to illness during the descent, underscoring the perilous nature of high-altitude mountaineering. Takahashi's team succeeded via the challenging south ridge route, further solidifying Ultar Sar's place in climbing lore. Amidst these triumphs, Daniel Akbar, a British-born Pakistani climber, also etched his name in history by summiting the peak through an alternative route, adding to the mountain's mystique and the lore of exploration in the Karakoram.
